More Than Rednecks – November Meeting

Completing this famous phrase of Jeff Foxworthy, “You might be a redneck if…..” provided a comedic beginning to our November meeting. Then we took furthered that process by watching video clips from “Honey Boo Boo,” “Swamp People,” and “Duck Dynasty.” (It was definitely a reality check to observe the subtitles interpreting the Southern drawl of the 6 year old TLC celebrity, Honey Boo Boo, based on the assumption that most American viewers could not otherwise understand her speech.) We certainly enjoyed lively conversation regarding typical conceptualizations of Southerners and discussed how distorted these assumptions could be. This lead addressing the issue of stereotyping people and understanding that we, as believers, need to see others, not through our own biased perceptions, but as one for whom Christ died. The final challenge was to recognize that we, as Christians, should show God’s love for all and reject our own prejudices. In future meetings, we will continue to look at Georgia’s history with a focus on social injustice. Such evaluations should heighten our own personal awareness of areas in which we need to alter what would be our normal response and instead act Christ as modeled and commanded us.

Starving Artists – Not a Chance (December Meeting Our Story His Song)

Our Impact team made great progress during our last meeting.
First of all, we reached a very important decision.  From this point
forward, we will have munchies at every meeting!  After all, how’s
a starving artist supposed to write life-changing lyrics and mind-blowing
melodies?

Next, we don’t really want the other teams to be haters, but our
collaboration is just sick!  Gotta keep most of it on the down-low, ya now?

Peace out!

End of the year meeting

So, what does toilet paper have to do with Camp Grace?

At this month’s meeting we continued our discussion of our book and began journaling our response to the reading.  What a challenging read!  This time, Ortberg reminded us that we are not mass-produced but instead beautifully hand-crafted by our magnificent God.  Isn’t that an amazing thought!  God could have put us into the reproduce machine like the toy soldiers in Santa Clause III, but He did not want robots or repeats, He desires individuals with all of our quirks, talents, passions, emotions, etc.

I am thankful our team is made up of such passionate individuals.  We are sure to accomplish much for our Lord by working together at Camp Grace.

So, as for the toilet paper tie-in…

As a chance for team-building silliness, we had a relay race during which each team had to line up like elementary schoolers and pass a roll of toilet paper from the first person to the last.  Sounds easy enough, but the students had to pass the roll through their shirt then behind them through their legs without ripping the delicate tissue.  I must admit, not participating was fun… I was able to see their silliness, but also how they began working together as a team and encouraging each other to “be careful” or “hurry up” etc.  It was fun to see them figure out how to accomplish the task despite the goofy goal.

Stop Sexual Trafficking Now November Meeting

We had a great meeting last week!! All of the girls worked very hard on note cards that will be given to girls at Princess Night. We discussed what should be put on the note cards,  and the girls came away with sweet and encouraging words for these girls on the streets. Some of the note cards have scripture and a message, and others have a picture and just a note telling the girls they are beautiful.

The girls are still collecting coins for “Coins for Children” and will continue this over the next couple of months.  Jessie has already collected $62.00! We are very excited to see how God can use these coins to help stop sexual trafficking in our world.

The next task the girls will have will be making toiletry bags to be distributed at a Princess Night in Atlanta. We will send more information to the group about the toiletry bags for our January meeting.

We are so blessed to work with such a sweet group of girls!

Party with A Purpose – November 2013

Thank you, India Wheeler, for sharing your wonderful baking skills with our team.  Your chocolate chip pumpkin muffins were delicious!

We love hearing stories about how our team members are reaching out to serve others like Mary Grace DeFrancesco and her family taking a Thanksgiving meal to our partner, Cobb Street Ministries.  With the Christmas season upon us, we have a perfect opportunity to reach out and touch the lives of others . . . think about how you could bless someone this Christmas with your servant heart, hospitality, or kitchen skills!  It doesn’t have to be elaborate, it’s the simple things that matter the most.

During our November IMPACT team meeting, we learned about “Getting the Most for your Money” by preparing a budget in advance, couponing, comparative shopping, and never going shopping when you’re hungry!  The challenge for this month is to read over the handout on various ways to save.

We’ll be sharing our IMPACT team’s plans with our elementary partners, Mrs. Maddox’s – 3rd Grade class, on Thursday, January 24 and again on Tuesday, April 23, please plan to attend one of these meetings.  As a reminder, there will not be an IMPACT meeting in December, we will meet again on Wednesday, January 16th.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in your prayer.  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.  Practice Hospitality.  Romans 12:12-13

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Sansom and Mrs. Gurniewicz

Epic Adventure – Everyone is a winner!

I am so proud of my team and their hard work. We raised over 200 cans! What a blessing that is going to be to families in need. Paul Wilson brought in over 100 cans! Paul gets the first shower. We will continue to collect cans over the next 3 months, so it is not to late to bless some families in need.

We also played a survival game. The winning team was Hayden Latimer and Ashton Fortson. These young men both received a backpack. Feel free to ask any of the Epic Adventure team the many uses of Crisco!
